HOSPITALITY
Society Architecture Collective partnered with Parker Torres Design and Clear on Black to completely reimagine the Fairmont Kea Lani resort in Maui, creating spaces that honor both the island's spirit and the human connections within them. The project transformed the open-air lobby into a cultural and social hub featuring a dramatic skylight, four water features, lush native landscaping, and the new Pilina bar—an arrival experience that celebrates Hawaii's natural environment while inviting guests to gather and belong.
These spaces weave an indoor-outdoor narrative throughout the resort that connects guests to Maui's landscape, culture, and spirit of Aloha.
Additional interventions included adding a structural floor to the existing breakfast restaurant to accommodate an expanded fitness center above, thoughtfully redesigning the spa with natural materials and Hawaiian healing traditions in partnership with the property's cultural advisor, and creating Hale Kukuna, an interactive cultural center that brings local artists and traditions to life. Together, these spaces weave an indoor-outdoor narrative throughout the resort that connects guests to Maui's landscape, culture, and spirit of Aloha—fostering genuine moments of discovery, relaxation, and community.
Lobby
A new skylight, water features, and native landscaping create a welcoming arrival experience anchored by spaces designed for genuine relaxation and meaningful social connection.
Kea Lani Restaurant
A structural floor thoughtfully divides the two-story volume into distinct levels, with the upper space housing an expanded fitness center that frames the surrounding landscape through expansive views and groin-vaulted ceilings.
Pilina Bar
An indoor-outdoor gathering space with banyan tree-inspired millwork and tropical elements invites guests to experience locally inspired cuisine and drinks while connecting with the island and each other.
Hale Kukuna Cultural Center
An interactive hub co-created with cultural advisors that transforms an underutilized lounge into a dynamic space where guests explore Hawaiian traditions, celebrate local artists, and participate in hands-on cultural experiences.
Spa
The thoughtfully redesigned spa incorporates natural materials, traditionally used Hawaiian medicinal flora, and new salt rooms to create a sanctuary for wellness and restoration.
